Why the Cape Town Dream Doesn't Hold Up
Kapstadt gilt als eine der schönsten Städte der Welt und als Sehnsuchtsort für Influencer:innen und Digital Nomads. Blauer Ozean, perfekte Cafés und günstige Lebenshaltungskosten. Aber hinter der Kulisse aus morgendlichem Schwimmen im Ozean und Tafelberg-Panorama liegt eine Geschichte, die bis heute die Stadt prägt: Kolonialismus, Apartheid und eine Ungleichheit, die zu den höchsten der Welt zählt.
In diesem Video schauen wir hinter den Content, der Kapstadt romantisiert. Wir sprechen über die Kriminalität und darüber, wen sie eigentlich betrifft. Wir gehen zurück zum Group Areas Act, zu Township-Zwangsumsiedlungen und District 6. Und wir schauen auf die Gegenwart: Gentrifizierung, Rassismus, steigende Mietpreise durch ausländische Käufer:innen, und ein kontroverses Bauprojekt: eine Mauer entlang des Highways vom Flughafen in die Stadt, die Townships vom Blick der Tourist:innen abschirmen soll.

Cape Town is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and a dream destination for influencers and digital nomads. Blue ocean, perfect cafés, and low cost of living. But behind the backdrop of morning swims in the ocean and Table Mountain panoramas lies a history that still shapes the city today: colonialism, apartheid, and a level of inequality that ranks among the highest in the world.
In this video, we look behind the content that romanticizes Cape Town. We talk about crime and who it actually affects. We go back to the Group Areas Act, forced township removals, and District 6. And we look at the present: gentrification, racism, rising rents driven by foreign buyers, and a controversial construction project: a wall along the highway from the airport into the city, meant to shield townships from tourists' view.
With insights from Katrin Seidel (Heinrich Böll Foundation) and Larissa Pflüger (German Africa Foundation), and an account from Simona, who lived in Cape Town.
